bioReportR is a customizable, community-driven tool for regional biodiversity reporting and monitoring. The tool was developed to help address a lack of sustainable local and regional-scale biodiversity monitoring systems in many countries by aggregating and synthesizing existing biodiversity occurrence data, including records available through GBIF. The tool combines spatial and temporal analyses to enable users to visualize and explore biodiversity patterns, observation efforts, protected areas, community science contributions and potential species and population declines. The tool also includes an extirpation-probability component that uses species sighting records to estimate the probability that species or inferred local populations may have disappeared from a region. This can help identify potential declines and areas where further monitoring may be warranted. bioReportR is currently a prototype based on R Markdown via the popular hugo-based publishing system, blogdown. It offers a flexible framework to support regional biodiversity monitoring and conservation planning, while also highlighting and encouraging community science contributions.

| Recommendation for its use: | How it works bioReportR combines regional biodiversity occurrence data from GBIF and other sources with a user-defined taxon list and optionally, spatial datasets such as habitat zones, elevation and protected areas. Users can assemble and align these inputs, then map their data fields to the core fields required by the framework. After installing the necessary software, users clone the bioReportR repository, add their datasets and run preparatory R scripts to process the information. Users can customize a set of interactive reporting components to explore regional biodiversity, observation history, community science contributions and biodiversity within protected areas. |
